Sustainable packaging solutions, holistically conceived

Do you want to rethink your packaging sustainably?

We implement sustainable packaging solutions with maximum product protection, high process reliability, and economic efficiency.

Sustainability begins with the right requirement.

Sustainable packaging is not a single material or an isolated machine. It arises from the interplay of packaging design, material selection, process layout, and degree of automation. At the same time, regulatory requirements such as the PPWR and economic pressure along the entire value chain are increasing.

At the Packaging Competence Center, KOCH pools its expertise for sustainable packaging solutions. Here, we provide advice based on your specific requirements and develop packaging concepts that are recyclable, resource-efficient, process-safe, and economically viable.

Sustainability along the entire process chain

Sustainable packaging solutions are developed at KOCH along the entire process chain. From the initial idea to series-ready implementation, all steps are holistically coordinated with each other.

Key components:

  • Analysis of product, market, and regulatory framework conditions
  • Packaging development and material testing in the Packaging Competence Center
  • Design and adaptation of assembly, filling, and packaging processes
  • Integration of inspection, marking, and traceability functions
  • Scalable implementation from pilot projects to turnkey solutions

Folding box

Folding boxes are an established form of packaging and presentation in retail and are also practical for storage and handling. Previously often used as secondary or tertiary packaging, they are increasingly being used as environmentally friendly primary packaging for durable consumer goods, either individually or in sets.

KOCH provides support in the design of format, material, and process to ensure that folding cartons are implemented in a process-safe, efficient, and brand-appropriate manner. Depending on the product and requirements, both side loading and top loading concepts can be realized.

Possibilities:

  • Use of pre-fabricated, pre-printed folding boxes
  • Inlays made of cardboard tohold the product in the place
  • Mainfold formats from small to large
  • Easy to open and re-close thanks to tuck-in tab

Advantages:

  • 100% recyclable mono-material packaging
  • Low machine investment
  • Space-saving packaging format for optimized transportation and logistics
  • Low waste fees
  • Case erector in indexing or continuous operation mode

cyclePac®

cyclePac® is a single-material cardboard packaging based on cellulose and is fully recyclable. Optionally, it can be made from FSC-certified cardboard or recycled material. cyclePac® consists of a cardboard cover and backing card, making it suitable for stable, well-sealed everyday products.

For high-quality applications, cyclePac® can be enhanced through embossing, high-quality printing, and coating, without losing sight of its recyclability.

Possibilities:

  • Windows with/without cellophane (also bio-based film)
  • Cardboard inlay to hold the product in place
  • Easy-open features like perforations or a tuck-in-tab
  • Different hanger holes and/or stand-up base
  • High-quality printing on cardboard tray and backing card
  • More space for brand presentation by rear-mounted cardboard tray

Advantages:

  • 100% recyclable mono-material packaging
  • Lower machine investment compared to packaging in plastic blisters
  • Selected sample packaging, certified for recycling
  • Simple, economical processing on KOCH machines
  • Simultaneous packaging in blisters and cyclePac® possible on a single machine

cycleBox®

cycleBox® combines the advantages of cyclePac® with the functionality of a folding box. The packaging form is fully recyclable and, similar to blisters, is filled using the established toploading process. Existing feeding equipment can be integrated into the process.

Special feature of cycleBox®: The sealing edge is folded inward. This allows the outer surfaces to be printed seamlessly and makes them ideal for product presentation. Flat blanks are sealed in the packaging machine using the heat-sealing process, which supports the recycling process right from the creation of the packaging.

Possibilities:

  • Integrated tamper-evident seal
  • Maximum brand presentation surface
  • Cardboard insert to hold the product in place
  • Easy-open features
  • Different hanger holes
  • High-quality printing on all visible surfaces
  • If requested, we only use FSC-certified cardboard or recycled paper

Advantages:

  • 100% recyclable mono-material packaging
  • Lower machine investment compared to packaging in plastic blisters
  • Processing of flat blanks reduces material consumption
  • Simple, economic processing on KOCH machines
  • Low waste fees

cycleForm®

cycleForm® is a packaging variant based on molded fiber materials of biological origin and is particularly suitable for protecting sensitive products from dust. The molding of paper is a joint development by KOCH and the Technical University of Dresden.

The packaging is characterized by a soft, pleasant feel and rounded edges. Slight creasing is process-related and can be specifically controlled and managed for an appealing appearance.

Possibilities:

  • For individual products or sets
  • Sealing with formable paper or sealing card
  • Rounded and flat contours, steep side walls
  • Embossing for an appealing finish
  • Printing of backing card and/or flat paper side

Advantages:

  • Tested and certified material from forests of the northern hemisphere
  • Packaging fully recyclable and biodegradable
  • Thermoformed with pressure control for best forming quality
  • Material completely plastic-free and without coating
  • Low waste charges

Sustainable film

Blisters made from sustainable films expand the portfolio of environmentally friendly packaging. Depending on requirements, films can be made entirely or largely from recycled material or be bio-based. These films can either be returned to the recycling loop or are biodegradable.

All currently available films are tested with regard to temperature behavior, durability, and peel properties to ensure they can be processed reliably on KOCH machines.

Possibilities:

  • All common blister types can be produced
  • Airtight blister formats for sterile products
  • Easy open features like perforation, flap or pouch function
  • Semi-automatic sealing of pre-fabricated blisters
  • Fully automatic forming, filling and sealing

Advantages:

  • For optimum interaction with KOCH machines
  • Best protection and appealing appearance thanks to transparent films
  • Packaging completely recyclable or biodegradable
  • Easy conversion of existing KOCH machines and lines
  • Most cost-effective sustainable form of packaging

From the idea to the sustainable packaging solution

The entry into sustainable packaging begins with clarity about goals and framework conditions. In the Packaging Competence Center, we work with you to develop robust concepts and test materials, designs, and processes under real conditions.

On this basis, scalable packaging solutions are created that can be seamlessly integrated into your production. KOCH implements individual process steps as well as comprehensive turnkey concepts from a single source.

Sustainable Consulting

Implement in a PPWR-compliant and economical manner

The EU PPWR tightens requirements for recyclability and material use. KOCH analyzes your portfolio, assesses areas for action, and develops circular concepts that meet requirements while reducing costs and risks.
